The First Paediatric Palliative Care Centre in Sri Lanka together with Paediatric housing

Suwa Arana

WHO definition of palliative care for children represents a special, but closely related field to adult palliative care. Palliative care for children is the active total care of the child's body, mind and spirit, and also involves giving support to the family. It begins when illness is diagnosed, and continues regardless of whether or not a child receives treatment directed at the disease. ...

Another main difficulty that is being faced by families of children with cancer is the need for accommodation for the child and family especially as the treatment regimen tends to be long and intermittent, which doesn’t allow them to go home and return for treatment due to financial constraints and the child being unwell in the majority of patients/cases.

Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their sick children – a long time to be away or to divide a family. For Children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having their parents close by for love and support. We aim to provide a place for families to call home so they can stay close to their hospitalised child at no cost, which is very similar to the Ronald McDonald House concept that is seen worldwide.

This concept is built on the idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. We believe that when a child is hospitalized the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed.

Families are stronger when they are together, which helps in the healing process. By being close parents also can better communicate with their child’s medical team and keep up with complicated treatment plans when needed. They can also focus on the health of their child. When your child is sick, the best care possible is sought – even if it is hundreds of miles away.

Suwa Arana Journey

Our Vision

Our vision now that we are open is to continue to provide the care and support of children with cancer and their families, to build confidence that cancer is not ‘the end’ but just another illness to overcome and give help to return to a healthy life.

Our Goal

We have reached our goal of opening our doors to admit children battling cancer and their families.

Our Mission

Our mission is built on the idea that nothing else matters when a family needs to focus on the health of their child. We believe that when a child is hospitalised the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed. If required and requested by the parents we provide end of life care in our Rainbow Rooms.
